Zurga’s Fire by Murray Lee Eiland Jr. is book 3 of the Orfeo Saga. Clarice and Orfeo have got together with Zurga, Daryush, and King Telemon to face off against Bayanu, a wicked tyrant who is set on enslaving Orfeo’s people. Daryush has other things on his mind though; it would seem his former lover no longer needs him now that she is the Queen of Babylon, but he will fight for her, protect her while others attempt to take her life. Zurga and his students stand side by side to fight against the mighty Getae, an army that shows no mercy, an army that is growing by the day. They are hopelessly outnumbered, but they must stand together for evil must be destroyed. Can they stop the invasion that is about to take their lives and their culture?
Zurga’s Fire by Murray Lee Eiland Jr. is the third in a saga and I must confess to not having read the first two books. However, that did not spoil my enjoyment of this story and, although I think the entire saga would be best read in order, I did find that this had more than enough detail in it for me to understand and keep up with the story. There is a lot of historical detail in this story and that, for me, makes it seem more real. I love reading about the ancient Greeks anyway so this was a bit of a treat for me. In terms of character development, I couldn’t fault it; by the end of the book I knew the main characters inside out. The plot was complex but thrilling, and the descriptive nature of the story brings it truly alive, particularly the battle scenes. This is a story filled to the brim with action and clearly shows the creative nature of the author. I thoroughly enjoyed it and would recommend it to anyone that enjoys a good action story set in the past.
