Jealous Jitzey by Stevi Reed is a children’s book that explores the complex emotions of jealousy and comparison through the engaging tale of Jitzey Bitzey, the often-overlooked sister of the famous Itzey Bitzey spider. Aimed at children in grades K-3, this story serves as a read-aloud that brings to life the struggles and triumphs of its charming protagonist. The narrative follows Jitzey as she embarks on a journey to step out of the shadow of her famous sibling. Struggling with feelings of inadequacy and envy, Jitzey’s adventure acts as a metaphor for children learning to recognize and appreciate their own unique talents. Reed, a licensed therapist and mother, skillfully incorporates psychological insights into the story, making complex emotions accessible to young readers.

The story is engaging and well-paced. Through Jitzey’s experiences, children are introduced to jealousy, not just as a feeling, but as something that can be understood and managed. The book does a commendable job of teaching empathy and the importance of open communication in friendships. The hand-painted illustrations by Scottish artist Jane Atwell add appeal to the story. Atwell transforms the often feared spider into an adorable character, helping to soften children's initial apprehension toward such creatures and enhancing the story’s message of finding beauty and worth in what might initially seem unappealing. Jealous Jitzey is an excellent resource for parents looking to discuss emotional intelligence and interpersonal relationships with children. Stevi Reed's story entertains and imparts valuable life lessons in understanding and handling feelings of jealousy.
