“Does anything even matter anymore? If I die today, will anyone care?” For John Sandes, the protagonist of Joseph Paul D'Aquisto's novel Unleash the Fury: A Storm of Vengeance on Eastern Sands, the real question is whether he cares. John is a 69-year-old ex-Seattle cop haunted by his memories, who takes a vacation to Sri Lanka. While exploring the island, he stumbles upon a shabby little town that even the flies and vermin seem ashamed to call home, where he witnesses a horrific crime. Fueled by his mind's demons gnawing at his sanity, John gets involved. However, there is a catch: the town is ruled by two rival criminal gangs engaged in a cold war that is ready to ignite. John is about to learn that playing both sides against the middle comes at a cost, and as the lines between right and wrong blur, he stands on the precipice of becoming a thug.
Hard-hitting from the get-go, Unleash The Fury by Joseph Paul D'Aquisto is a neo-Western crime story full of action. The familiar plot caught me by surprise as it is very reminiscent of Akira Kurosawa's film Yojimbo, or more precisely, the 1996 remake Last Man Standing, where a skillful gunman provokes two opposing factions into destroying one another. Dark themes permeate the story and suit the plot well. Character development is focused mainly on the protagonist, portrayed as a complex individual with a tenuous grip on sanity. The pace is fast and furious without any let-up, making for a lively and entertaining read. Overall, Unleash The Fury is a tried and true formula that will please adrenaline junkies and fans of action tales.
