Gold’s Evolution: From Ancient Coins to Digital Markets by Stewart Whitaker provides a fascinating look at the history of gold. In it, Whitaker examines gold's economic and trade value and its religious and cultural significance through the ages. He begins by looking at the origins of gold, its influence on ancient civilizations such as Egypt, Greece, and Rome, and gold’s impact in the Middle Ages, the Age of Discovery, and the Gold Rushes in America and Australia, The author then moves on to gold’s influence on the investment markets and science and technology in the twentieth century, Finally, he concludes by assessing the role of gold in the digital age and speculates upon its role in future markets.

What I liked the most about Gold’s Evolution was Stewart Whitaker’s ability to educate and engage his readers, making what might have been considered an introductory course about gold’s history into an intriguing exploration of its evolution. With his thorough research and impeccable documentation he earned my trust in his knowledge of the subject and engaged my interest with a vivid style and the surprising connections he reveals. For example, when Whitaker reviews the symbolic nature of gold in ancient cultures worldwide, it is clear that most cultures shared a common reverence for gold beyond its monetary value. In another example, when he analyzes the Gold Standard Era, he notes the importance of President Richard Nixon’s decision to move away from the gold standard as a dramatic economic shift that has relevance even today. Examples like these made reading Gold’s Evolution well worth it for me.
