The Marvel of Maneo and The Moon by James D. Rosenberger follows Maneo, a lonely boy affected by the COVID pandemic, mostly due to isolation, as his life changes. His parents decide to homeschool him, leading to a lack of real social interactions, especially with his best friend, Travis. Seeking an outlet, Maneo stumbles upon an online store selling an "intergalactic boomerang," which promises to travel anywhere in the universe. One night, Maneo throws the boomerang toward the moon, triggering a magical encounter with the Man in the Moon (MIM). MIM invites Maneo on a cosmic journey where he experiences the wonders of the universe and learns the importance of friendship and compassion. Returning to Earth, Maneo reconnects with Travis, beginning a new adventure grounded in the lessons he learned.

The Marvel of Maneo and The Moon is a delightfully whimsical and heartfelt tale. James D. Rosenberger’s writing appeals to those of us who understand the loneliness and the yearning for connection that was felt during the COVID-19 lockdown. I love that it's a simple boomerang that leads to cosmic adventures and the lessons that follow. The graphics are spectacular and go a long way in making an already good story even better, and somehow make the most fantastical elements feel grounded. That says a lot for a tale about a space-faring boomerang. Readers will connect with Maneo's journey and can turn it into a conversation about reconciling one’s inner world. Rosenberger’s literary look at isolation and the importance of real human connection feels especially poignant in today’s world, making this book both timely and timeless. Recommended.
