The Story of My Universe and Other Stories, by the well-reviewed Christopher Guerin, is an intriguing collection of stories that will make you think, feel, chuckle, and imagine. This writer has a versatile style that will satisfy those looking for variety and depth in their short stories. The themes are as wide and deep as a river, from romance to violence to the fantastic. His characters are so dynamic; no two are alike--fully realized and alive. He writes about human frailty in a way that will make readers connect with the characters and themes, even if the reader hasn't experienced exactly the same thing. I love the short story format. You get so much in such a short space. Not a lot of writers do this well, but Guerin is gifted at saying a lot in a compact package. The minimalistic dialogue is reminiscent of one of my favorite authors, Cormac McCarthy, but Guerin's punchy style stands out as uniquely his own.
The author doesn't mess around in his short stories. They all have something to say, and I think that's the way short stories should be written. He is exceptional with his command of the short story, and any aspiring short story writer can learn a lot by reading this volume. His style varies from one story to the other, which is so creative and refreshing. As a whole, this collection is powerful and memorable and has touches of softness and intricacy too. His writing isn't always predictable, but you know it's going to be good. My personal favorite is "Poet to Poet" as its theme is writing and poetry writing, briefly touching on the classic poets. This is a book that you can treasure for a long time, study in a classroom setting, or discuss in a book club. If you like stories overflowing with ideas, characters, and mood, The Story of My Universe and Other Stories by Christopher Guerin is one you can't pass up.
