Author Biography

Lisa A. Moore juggles more storylines than her pilot husband’s flight schedule. As a master of urban fantasy and psychological thrillers—with occasional dalliances in gothic and paranormal—she brings tales to life where magic sparks in the mundane and shadows hide more than secrets. Her novel, Whispers of the Selkie (January 2025), kicks off an exciting trilogy. When she’s not writing, Lisa can be found chasing her spirited dog, Violette, or splashing vivid watercolors in a creative whirl.

In The Bet in Nocturne Alley by Lisa A. Moore, circumstances bring three unlikely strangers together on a treacherous quest. They meet in The Crooked Candle, a bar in the dark and foreboding Nocturne Alley, where the undead and a host of other nocturnal creatures roam. Amara Nocturne, an undead witch who still bears the mark of her enemy, reluctantly teams up with half-warlock and half-machine Rhys Dagonhart and Finnian "Finn" Quibble, a merchant with a knack for rhymes, in a bid to get rid of the curse that has haunted her for centuries. The three cursed allies travel to the old alchemical distillery where they must face a series of challenges. Overcoming these hurdles will set them free. Can they stand together against overwhelming odds?

Treat yourself to a delicious brew of dark fantasy with Lisa A. Moore's The Bet in Nocturne Alley. Twisted and packed with action, mystery, and dark humor, this is a perfect gothic fantasy for a cozy evening. The story is written succinctly and is entertaining from the first page to the last as there is not a single dull moment! The setting draws you in from the get-go, and the more you learn about the characters, the more you will find them endearing. Amara, Rhys, and Finn, at first glance, may seem like a bunch of misfits, but they form a formidable trio. Their growing friendship and banter throughout were some of my favorite parts of the book. Dark fantasy readers will have a lot of fun with this story. Highly recommended!

Amara Nocturne is a witch forced to endure an agonizing existence as an undead entity, trapped between life and death after being betrayed by a friend. Rhys Dagonhart is a warlock whose humanity hangs by a thread due to a malicious gnome who merged a mechanical artifact into his body; he now lives as part man, part machine. Finnian Quibble, usually called Finn, is a merchant with a cursed tongue, unable to speak in anything other than rhymes. Three completely different people, united only by their unfortunate circumstances, join a mysterious challenge to win a powerful ring that could end their curses. Of course, nothing is as simple as it seems, with conspiracies and hidden connections revealed along the way. This premise forms the backdrop of Lisa A. Moore's The Bet in Nocturne Alley, a character-driven fantasy story filled with magic, curses, and intrigue.

The immersive writing style got me hooked from the first page as Moore excels in crafting vivid descriptions that establish a unique atmosphere and serve as storytelling and characterization tools. For example, magical phenomena act as extensions of the characters' personalities and mental states, allowing them to (consciously or not) express themselves beyond words and body language. The protagonists have great chemistry, and their interactions never get boring, especially given the sarcastic banter between Amara and Rhys. Overall, The Bet in Nocturne Alley is a short but delightful read that should appeal to most fantasy fans, especially those who love atmospheric storytelling, psychological exploration, and witty dialogue.

The Bet in Nocturne Alley by Lisa A. Moore is told from three perspectives. Amara Nocturne is a witch with raw, frosty power who struggles with pain from an arrow from the Alabaster Order. Rhys Dagonhart is a half warlock, half machine, who was "built" by a gnome and is haunted by his prophecy. Finnian "Finn" Quibble's rhymes seem optimistic, but he sees every angle in a situation before his mouth betrays him. As the trio despair over their curses, they hear rumors surface about someone who has been stealing power with ancient artifacts and spells. Finn, Amara, and Rhys enter a wager to obtain a ring that may end their suffering at the Alchemical Distillery, where the Master Alchemist issues each challenge. The undead Amara, mostly mechanical Rhys, and endlessly poetic Finn reconsider their chances by joining forces and the victory or betrayal it might bring.

Underneath everything on the surface of the story, Lisa A. Moore waits in the shadows, ready to pounce on her readers when they think they have the plot untangled. Her characters' strained connections make it difficult to see the full scope of the plot until the climax and keep readers hastily turning pages as they try to unmask the villain behind the curses that may not be as separate as they seem. Throughout the story, Moore's layered characters grow through their bonds and evolve in their dire circumstances, bringing more depth to the narrative. Understanding each person's past and motives is critical, but Moore withholds just the right amount of information until the last chapters. Readers who enjoy magical mysteries will love The Bet in Nocturne Alley.
