Denele Campbell’s novella, The Journal of Admiral Wade and Other Short Stories, is a nice collection of prose. In Parker’s Cross Roads, a sullen woman's life changes when she goes for a walk in the woods and finds herself back in time helping wounded soldiers in the Civil War. Fresh Air is what Ed needs to clear his head while he cares for his beloved wife whose memory loss worsens. The Journal of Admiral Wade gives a documentation of the Admiral’s eerie mystical experience with a tribe. Jill’s Magnificent Bosom has always been the talk of the town, mostly by the males, both young and old, but their teen daughter’s large endowment constantly distresses her parents. A lonely woman wins a trip to a remote, impoverished island where her sensual inhibitions are suddenly awakened in Her Natural Home.
Denele Campbell’s writing pace is unhurried and laid-back, setting a similar mood for anyone who reads her novella. These eight stories are unpredictable in content, and are poignant, witty, or contemplative with good conclusions. I think the characters are charming while the themes are very inventive. The characters’ insecurities and strengths are natural, and it is easy to visualize their reactions to the drama they experience. The Journal of Admiral Wade and Other Short Stories is ideal for a quick read while on the go. The novella has a lovely cover illustration that complements The Journal of Admiral Wade. The author is adept at storytelling and readers will enjoy her short and interesting novella.
