Surgery Simplified by Tamra Ellsworth is a spectacularly thorough overview of the surgical process, covering everything from pre-surgery preparation to post-surgery recovery. The credentialed Ellsworth discusses the importance of following pre-surgery instructions, like fasting. She tells us that once in the pre-op area, a nurse will gather medical history and prepare the patient for surgery, administering medications and placing an IV. Ellsworth covers hospital safety protocols, such as patient identification and the roles of the surgical team, including anesthesiologists and operating room nurses. She talks about potential surgery delays at any point, why they occur, and what happens next. Post-surgery, Ellsworth goes over pain management, monitoring recovery, and following recovery instructions for a smooth healing process.
Tamra Ellsworth’s Surgery Simplified is the book I needed six years ago, but am so happy it is here for those who are going into an operation without feeling like they understand the process. Ellsworth does an outstanding job of removing the confusion and presenting what to expect with clarity and compassion. I think what stood out most to me is that Ellsworth humanizes the reader in a way that I've not come across to such a degree before. Her writing style is approachable but there's the genuine authority of a seasoned nurse who knows what she's talking about. It's reassuring and I trust what she says. Armed with Ellsworth’s work, I can see so much patient empowerment, and readers feeling like they can advocate for themselves effectively as active participants in their care. Ellsworth’s thoughtful approach ensures that readers not only understand the technical aspects but also feel supported throughout their surgical journey, making her an invaluable resource for anyone preparing for surgery. Very highly recommended.
