Cherish and the Duke is a steamy romance by Meara Platt. Twenty-four-year-old Lady Cherish Northam is left in the care of an uncle and aunt who seem to be stealing from her trust fund and who want to keep her locked up from society to prevent her from marrying and taking charge of her inheritance. Gawain, Duke of Bromleigh, is one of three “Silver Dukes,” who have made it into their slightly greying 40s as sexy, confirmed bachelors. When Gawain’s cousin and Cherish’s best friend, Lady Shoreham, decides to play matchmaker with a week-long house party, she plots to get them together. The problem is that she has convinced Gawain that it was his nephew and not him she planned on matching. How much jealousy does Cherish need to evoke before Gawain will finally admit she has stolen his heart?
Cherish and the Duke is a Regency era romp in the lives of a strong but obedient young lady and a much older duke who was once spurned by the woman he loved. The steamy part occurs at the end, so this is perfect for those who are looking for solid plotting in their romance novels. Gawain is realistically portrayed as conflicted when he struggles with his emotions for Cherish while trying to convince her she would make a good wife for his nephew. Cherish is also well-developed as an enlightened woman who ran her father’s estate and who is now practically a servant and forced to watch all she has built be ruined by her uncle. The theme of finding love past your prime will resonate with romance readers who still haven’t met their Prince Charming.
