Patches by Kathryn Hodgson is a heartrending story that revolves around Pat, a giant, furry bear who is warm as a bear and kind as an angel. One misty afternoon while collecting berries, Pat trips, leaving purple patches on the snow. Pat tries to see what made him trip and he notices a light that sparkles. He knows it is real and very sad. Pat decides to take the ‘Thing’ home. Pat knows that sadness really needs time and comfort to heal and he decides to let ‘Thing’s’ sadness in, accept it, and love it better. The book handles the concept of sadness and grief beautifully, and shows young readers how important it is to help a friend in need and give them support when they require it.
The messages conveyed through the story are excellent and help readers change their attitude when it comes to helping someone who is sad. It teaches them acceptance, patience, compassion, and love. Pat’s character is real and can be understood by anyone who has friends who are sad and grieving. It’s a good bedtime storybook for children and can also be used for read aloud sessions in classrooms and school libraries. Children are able to understand a message, concept, or moral easily when expressed with the help of a story. Here Pat teaches them about reaching out to a sad person, and the importance of expressing love, comfort, and kindness during times of grief and pain.
