The Adventures of Sunny Washington by Dickie Erman transports us to the old South. It's 1858, two years since twenty-eight-year-old Sunny Washington escaped slavery in Mississippi. Sunny's journey to freedom led her to Windsor, Canada. There, luck led her to meet a kindhearted couple who cared for her and offered her a job at their general store. But harrowing memories of a life she weathered at Master Horton's plantation still haunt her dreams. Now a free woman and filled with empathy for those she left behind, Sunny sets out for Mississippi on a quest that might end up reliving the painful nightmares at the plantation. In this riveting story, we board the buck wagon alongside Sunny, her guide Hud, and their horse Midnight and embark on a voyage deep into the heart of the unforgiving wilderness and across to Master Horton's plantation to rescue Sunny's long-lost best friend, Polly. But will they make it back to Canada?
In The Adventures of Sunny Washington, Dickie Erman illuminates history. The main characters are young, high-spirited, and with a diverse set of motivations. They are unrelenting in their pursuit of positive change and a better tomorrow, and their loyalty, love, and resilience remain unwavering. Readers will find their stories uplifting. Sergeant Sam Thomas (a Black man in the United States Army) was my favorite. Sam graduated with honors from Yale Law School and West Massachusetts Military Academy. Now commanding an outpost with seven white deputies, Sam is a distinguished and accomplished young Black man in a white man's world. Readers will find his logic and intellectual reasoning as refreshing as I did. The chapters are short and packed with wonderful personalities, an unputdownable drama, and enthralling action. War and upheaval are fast approaching from the far South. The Adventures of Sunny Washington is a real page-turner. It's touching, gritty, and profound.
