In Translucent, Joey Paul delivers a gripping narrative set in a dystopian world where a virus has decimated the adult population, and those left behind face treachery and the struggle for survival. The story follows Zya Monk, a seventeen-year-old girl who, after an attack on her segment, is thrust into a dangerous expedition outside the walls that have confined her and her peers. Accompanied by friends and suspected enemies, Zya embarks on a harrowing journey to the Central Zone to discover the truth about the virus and safeguard the community’s future. The stakes heighten as dark secrets unravel with life-threatening encounters and battles against natural elements and hostile humans.

The characters in Translucent are richly drawn and intriguing; each character has a motivation that fuels their action. Zya stands out as a determined young leader, battling her insecurities while trying to guide her group through precarious territory. Lena, her supportive friend, endures physical abuse yet shares Zya's resolve. The dynamics within the group, including the group of suspects—each with their motivations—introduce tension and mistrust that complicate their mission. The setting, a once-familiar world overrun by nature and danger, amplifies the narrative's bleak atmosphere. Joey Paul is a great storyteller with a wonderful gift for creating relatable characters and an immersive world. Conflict is ingeniously handled, and the threat of betrayal from within becomes a haunting specter over Zya as she must discern friend from foe to protect those she cares about. I enjoyed the exquisite prose, superior storytelling, memorable characters, and finely drawn dystopian world.
