My Imperfect Mommy by Dr. Marissa Stridiron MD and Dr. Shaley Sehgal MD is a children’s illustrated book, written from the perspective of a little boy who simply adores his mother. Even so, he explores with the reader what it would take to make a perfect mommy, imagining exactly what a perfect mommy would, and would not, be. Poetically, we see a list of ideal traits that no one could ever measure up to. That is the point of the story, because not only are these expectations unrealistic, but the perfect mommy would end up being somewhat unrelatable to the child, who understands that sometimes he makes mistakes as well. The child goes on to list those characteristics he loves about his mother, and how he would never trade her for anyone else in the whole, wide world.
Mothers struggle with guilt when they compare themselves to others and may aspire to be someone they are not. I’ve seen this in action, and it tends to rob them of the joy of motherhood. That’s why this book is so important, perhaps for mothers more than anyone else. If they can see their value from the viewpoint of their children, then perhaps they could relax a little and enjoy their parental role just a bit more. I found the artwork to be wonderful, colorful, detailed, and engaging. Children (and parents) will find themselves opening the book again and again just for the artwork. This is professional work, through and through. My Imperfect Mommy by Dr. Marissa Stridiron MD and Dr. Shaley Sehgal MD is highly recommended for children and adults alike.
