The Scary Snakes by Tuula Pere, another installment in the Little Fears series, is a thrilling and engaging action book for children ages 4–8. Shelly's family often has picnics in the forest. But Shelly cannot enjoy them as she is afraid of snakes. While Shelly's elder brother, Adrian, loves exploring the forest, she is too scared to leave the path. Shelly cries and doesn't want to sit on the blanket, even for tasty treats. Upon returning home, Shelly calls her grandma who promises to visit Shelly tomorrow. It seems that Shelly's grandma has a plan! She invites Shelly to knit snakes with the multicolored yarn she brought. Will Shelly overcome her fear?

Tuula Pere's The Scary Snakes helps young readers conquer their fears and their parents and teachers better understand children and their behavior. The book is heartwarming as the main character discusses her problem with her beloved grandmother. Thus, the author emphasizes the importance of the older generation for their grandchildren. These special intergenerational bonds positively impact children's development and growth. Pere encourages creativity in her young readers. Shelly's grandma's unorthodox solution promises surprising results as the girl knits funny snakes with her. The author points out the significance of the color and texture for children. The book has an interesting dynamic between two siblings and many amazing twists in the plot. The illustrations by Catty Flores finely depict the characters' emotions and captivate children's imaginations. I highly recommend this book to those who want to help children conquer their fears.
