Poems Please by John Pare is an expansive collection, featuring over 90 original poems that vary in length, style, and theme. The poems take on a wide range of subjects, from nature and love to social commentary, humor, travel, and others. In “Spring Shower”, Pare uses rhyme and meter to describe the vibrant transition from winter to spring. “Cloud Haiku” brings to life the fleeting beauty of nature in a traditional 5-7-5 syllable structure. “Lord’s Central Hotel Matheran” juxtaposes the natural beauty of a holiday spot with the chaos of monkeys and human activity. “CATA (PO) STROPHE” humorously critiques punctuation errors, particularly the misuse of apostrophes, and “The Beautiful Little Carp” tells an allegorical tale of a carp seeking self-discovery through new experiences.
Poems Please by John Pare is a delightful and diverse collection that is an absolute testament to Pare's talent as a poet. Not only prolific but also remarkably skilled, Pare brings playfulness, wit, heartfelt feelings, and a more serious voice, as appropriate, to each poem. For me, it was the clever wordplay that struck me most. While it is impossible to pick one favorite, “Four Variations on Little Miss Muffet” stands out for its whimsical retellings of the classic nursery rhyme, each perspective offering an exaggerated yet sweet view. “Mah Jong on Colonsay” holds another top spot, embracing the competitive excitement of a fast-paced game with pitch-perfect rhythm. The collection's variety means that there is something for every mood, making Poems Please a must-read for those who enjoy intelligent poetry. Very highly recommended.
