In Matching Costumes by D.G. Driver, we are introduced to a little girl and her dog. The girl's mother told her that she could bring her faithful companion trick or treating with her so she dressed both of them up like pretty ballerinas. Her dog didn’t like the costume it was wearing and ripped it off. Knowing that wouldn’t work, she put sheets over them and decided that they could both be ghosts, but they couldn’t see and tripped. After thinking a bit, the girl decided that she and her dog would be clowns, but her dog took her red nose and ran off with it. Then she made them alien outfits out of boxes but once again her dog didn’t agree and shook the box off, ripping the costume to pieces. The small girl was very upset, and she wondered if she should just leave the dog at home. Then an idea came to her. She knew the perfect costume that she could wear...
I enjoyed reading this adorable story about a girl and her dog. I felt her struggle trying to find something that her dog would be okay with wearing. All of my dogs give me trouble when I try to put anything on them. It’s a very easy read but the illustrations go perfectly with it and in a lot of cases, they tell us what happens without even needing the words to say so. Both characters are very likable and a child could easily relate to the tale. I found Matching Costumes a nice fun read. D.G. Driver has done an excellent job with the story, while Cason Rome has created beautiful artwork that fits perfectly. It’s a book I would recommend to friends of mine with children.
