In Finn Adair Morgan's psychological thriller At the Risk of Recovery, Aran Moreau (the protagonist) wakes up from his bender, only he has no memory of how he ended up at the beach or how long he was passed out. The memory gaps alone are enough to drive him insane; however, the many voices running wild in his head are making it impossible for him to think straight. On top of it all, he can't imagine why he knows the gruesome details of certain murders which he has no way of knowing unless he is the serial killer himself. His last hope of finding the missing pieces of the puzzle, a session with his psychiatrist, proves to be in vain when she ends up -- for want of a better term -- firing him as her patient. His situation gets even more desperate when he finds a dead body, and the voices in his head identify this person and his personality traits.

At the Risk of Recovery begins at a slow pace with Aran's intrusive thoughts, his conversations with himself, something about oxifier repairs, etc. At one point, I wondered if the story would pick up the pace. However, the quality of Finn Adair Morgan's writing signaled that my patience would soon be rewarded. Within a few pages, the plot became captivating, practically hypnotizing. Aran Moreau's thoughts, ranging from morose to violent, coupled with the bizarre flashes of memory made him an untrustworthy protagonist. Could he be a serial killer and not know it? This question will propel the reader to keep reading until the very end. At the Risk of Recovery ticks all the boxes of an intriguing psychological thriller - a well-written story with a gripping plot.

At the Risk of Recovery is a gripping psychological thriller by Finn Adair Morgan. Aran Moreau wakes up with lapses in his memory to the extent that he is unsure of where he lives or what kind of drugs he's been using lately. Additionally, he hears voices in his head and sees visions that may or may not be real. His only chance at regaining his memories is through his therapist, Valerie Ecclewell. Meanwhile, a serial killer haunts the city of Sahm Avana with the blood of multiple victims on his hands. For some reason, Aran knows how the killer thinks and helps the authorities discover one of the dead bodies. Before he loses himself to the voice in his head, can Aran stop the killer and save his next victim?

At the Risk of Recovery is one of those pageturners where you can't even predict what will happen on the next page. Finn Adair Morgan has delivered a mind-bending thriller filled with mystery, suspense, and intrigue. The setting of Sahm Avana really sets the tone of the narrative. The story is dark and thoroughly engrossing from beginning to end. Morgan's characters are multi-faceted with layers of depth. The narrative shows you what goes on in the mind of the protagonist. Some of the most interesting parts for me were the introspective back-and-forths between the protagonist and the other voice in his head. I also liked the ending and felt it wrapped up the story with a neat bow. All in all, this is a gem of a book for fans of psychological thrillers.

K.C. Finn

At the Risk of Recovery by Finn Adair Morgan takes psychological suspense to a whole new level with a story that messes with your mind in the best way. Aran Moreau wakes up from an alcohol-induced blackout to a terrifying discovery—he’s not alone in his head. Multiple voices are fighting for space in his mind, and one of them belongs to a serial killer. Struggling to untangle his shattered memories in the strange city of Sahm Avana, he finds himself caught up in a murder investigation that’s way too close for comfort. As time runs out and his sense of reality starts slipping, Moreau has to figure out the truth before he loses himself completely.

Finn Adair Morgan pulls you right into Moreau’s fractured mind, making you question everything with him for a fantastic journey packed with suspense. The way Morgan blends noir-style grit with psychological horror kept me completely hooked, creating a dark, eerie atmosphere that lingers long after the last page. The mystery unfolds with plenty of twists, keeping the tension high while digging into big questions about identity and morality in a natural way. What stuck with me is how the story explores the fine line between good and evil, making us rethink how much control we have over ourselves. Overall, At the Risk of Recovery is a must-read for anyone who loves psychological thrillers that are as thought-provoking as they are gripping, and I would definitely recommend it.
