Strings Attached by Andrew Nitkin follows Jonathan Lanbourne, a concert guitarist on a European tour. While in Brussels, he’s coerced by the World Trade Company (WTC) to deliver mysterious packages after threats to his family. Along the way, Jonathan uncovers the WTC's illegal activities, including espionage and money laundering, and learns that some who are close to him are connected in an interesting way. Jonathan is pulled deeper into the conspiracy when he’s forced to assist in the delivery of a potentially harmful device linked to an arms deal. Jonathan narrowly escapes abduction and faces betrayals, but becomes instrumental in aiding authorities to dismantle the WTC operation. A whole new avalanche of troubles emerges during a South American concert tour, when someone Jonathan loves deeply goes missing.

Strings Attached by Andrew Nitkin is a really good mash-up of music and mayhem, and we see some muscle flexing occur with Nitkin's great writing ability. The story is sort of broken into two different parts with linked plots, first in Europe, then in the Americas, which wasn't expected but works out wonderfully. Jonathan Lanbourne is a thoroughly fleshed-out character, and his moral compass is set early on when a pass is made at him. I really appreciate how Nitkin envelopes us in the multiple settings without turning the book into a travelogue, mastering the tightrope that is a testament to his skill as a writer. The trans-continental arc is sophisticated, and Nitkin creates a believable world. This is a thriller that transcends its genre, and an absolute delight to read. Very highly recommended.
