Passion’s Duty by Lizzie Jenks is a steamy historical romance that takes place during the French and Indian War. Faith Richmond is in upstate New York with her father to survey the land he recently bought. James Carroll is an Irishman protecting Fort Johnson who stumbles across them wandering around the wilderness. Unfortunately, they end up at the fort, and Lizzie is injured, causing her father to leave her behind while he returns to Albany to prepare for his commission against the enemy. Will James be able to protect her not only from the men at the fort, including his boss, William Johnson, but also from his own wayward heart, which seems to have forgotten his upwardly mobile dreams and wants to risk everything for a relationship with her?

James is a strong male lead, and Faith, despite mostly adhering to the conventions of her time, is a solid female counterpart for him. The secondary characters supported the plot while adding hints of potential characters for future books. Lizzie Jenks’ theme of sacrificing all for love resonates throughout time and is as relevant today as it was in the 18th century. I felt she dealt well with the ethnic mixture that went into the founding of America, pointing out the prejudices and those who were smart enough to realize there wasn’t room for it when one is trying to survive and build a new world. Passion’s Duty is fast-paced and well-researched. The setting and some of the characters were pulled right out of history. All the pieces of the puzzle come together and fit together nicely in the end.
