Daddy Is Different Like That is the second book in the Daddy Like That Series by Mary McMahon and Jennifer Bucciero Boyles. Rachael and Laura marvel at the way their father says and does things. He has "Big L", or lasagna, for lunch and can pick up a mouse by the tail without flinching. Their father is definitely their hero, so when he decides to enter wheelchair archery, the girls are ready to support him. Multiple sclerosis creates obstacles, making it more difficult for their father to do certain tasks. However, he embraces the challenges and does his best with a smile. He chooses a good trainer to help him prepare for the Veteran Wheelchair Games and practices for several months. Rachael and Laura form tighter friendships and play with their father's dog, Tammy, and Buttercup, a cat that adopts their family. The big day of the games arrives, and the girls watch as their father takes the field.

Mary McMahon and Jennifer Bucciero Boyles have produced a lovely story full of heartfelt memories of Boyles' resilient father. As readers will discern from the authors' note and the photographs at the end of the story, Boyles wrote the book to honor her dad, and it's easy to see why Boyles loved her father so deeply. The book is humorous and inspiring and may remind readers of their father or other close family member with a unique perspective. Even though their dad was in a wheelchair, he didn't let his condition affect his mood or limit his goals. Their dad might seem different to some people, but Rachael and Laura know his quirks make him the interesting and lovable man they adore. A few other animals, like Tammy and Buttercup, and people, like Jimmy, are different, too, showing caring qualities that Rachael and Laura find notable. The sweet illustrations by Eleonora D'Amico display the love and community encouragement surrounding their father. Readers who enjoy stories about determined individuals who take hardships in their stride will love Daddy Is Different Like That.
