Invocation is the second book in the Three Times Blessed fantasy series by Nicole Warner, a great story that reads like a standalone. The novel features two compelling central characters, Eadred and Anais, who are caught up in a world that brims with conflict and strife. They are royals who are bonded together by an unusual relationship. While Anais is fated to marry King Edmund, Eadred’s world splinters with loss, but he must stand up to be a beacon of hope for his people. With the thirst for power inviting all sorts of enemies, the connection that Anais shares with Eadred will be the final hope of survival for their people. And can they muster up enough fight to keep their loved ones safe in the ultimate moment?
Invocation starts in the midst of action that announces this will be a pulsating read — and rightly so. The author’s storytelling skills shine through the narrative and I was enthralled by the expert use of the first-person narrative voice and the plot twists that kept me guessing. The characters are inventive and intuitive and the author weaves them with sufficient realism, allowing their humanity to come out through their flaws and numerous frustrating moments. The conflict is developed at multiple levels and it carries the story steadily forward. Nicole Warner’s world-building is incredibly rich, allowing readers to experience the thrills and pain of the characters as they navigate different contours of the political, social, and physical settings. Invocation is a page-turning story told in an engrossing narrative voice; it features excellent prose and consistent drama. One of those books that leave readers wanting more.
