In My Damnedest Dreams is a work of fiction in the dark fantasy, romance, and adventure subgenres, and is the fourth novel of the Obsidian Blade series. It is more suitable for mature adult readers owing to the presence of graphic sex and violence, as well as explicit language and dark themes. Penned by author team Nathan Wilson and S. E. Nin, this new installment plunges readers back into a Japan reeling from the aftermath of the Genpei War. Shindara, separated from his companions, is faced with a shadowy figure who holds Mikoto's life in the balance, forcing him into a perilous quest. The city of Sakai becomes the backdrop for a complex web of power struggles, crime syndicates, and unforeseen alliances.
Author team Nathan Wilson and S. E. Nin marry their talents beautifully to craft an immersive experience into a world rich in historical detail and vivid characters. The narrative does a seamless job of bringing together elements of historical fiction and fantasy, with a plot that unfolds like a well-crafted tapestry of interlocking storylines, important emotional decisions, and intense moments of romance. Wilson and Nin have created a captivating tale where the stakes are high, and the characters grapple with personal demons, intricate relationships, and the unpredictable currents of fate. This is all achieved with a confident dialogue style that offers truly individual attitudes and personalities but with a distinct overarching flair for the period and the mood. The vivid prose, coupled with the intricacies of Japanese history, crafts an imaginative tale that also feels grounded and realistic, and one is drawn deeper into the intricacies of a world on the brink of transformation because of how real the high stakes feel. Overall, I would certainly recommend In My Damnedest Dreams as a compelling and satisfying continuation of the Obsidian Blade series that fans will no doubt adore.
