Author Biography

Geoffrey Dutton's two novels feature people he never met in places he's never visited. But that's okay, because he's on the clairvoyant spectrum. He wrote them after years serving high tech, which he came to regret, to post essays denouncing its excesses. He also posted on politics, and turned to fiction when certain international developments forced him to. He maintains essays at progressivepilgrim.review, and blogs and hawks his books at perfidy.press, and issues Perfidy Press Provocations, a monthly newsletter. He lives in Metrowest Boston with his vivacious wife Aygül and feline muse Renée.

Her Own Devices by Geoffrey Dutton is an entertaining tale of action and justice set in picturesque Piraeus, Greece. Anna Burmeister, a grieving widow and dedicated mother, channels her pain into a fight against child trafficking after witnessing a young boy’s abduction. Her determination drives her to form the Children’s Protective League of Greater Athens, an organization fighting for the safety of vulnerable children. With the help of her hacker friend Ottovio and a diverse team of allies, Anna embarks on a dangerous mission to expose and dismantle a trafficking ring. Meanwhile, Mahmoud, her deceased partner, is denied entrance to paradise. Worried for Anna and their son, Mahmoud wishes to help but cannot do so. What will Anna do? Can she protect the vulnerable children? Is it too late for Mahmoud?

The novel masterfully blends heart-pounding suspense with a heartfelt story of loss, motherhood, and justice. Anna is a compelling protagonist who is courageous and deeply human. I loved how her resolve anchors the story. Author Geoffrey Dutton skillfully captures the harsh realities of child trafficking, weaving social commentary seamlessly into the plot without detracting from the personal stakes. The pacing is fast, with moments of action that build to an exciting climax as Anna and others take the fight directly to the traffickers. The subplot of Mahmoud’s ethereal existence adds emotional depth, creating a bittersweet connection between the living and the lost. Her Own Devices is a fascinating and thought-provoking novel that I thoroughly enjoyed!
