Second Pocket First by Gregory Grosvenor is a delightful story about an old-fashioned burglar. The main character is Issey, who likes to think of himself as a 'gentleman burglar.' He never carries a gun, never resorts to violence, and never harms anyone; he just helps himself to their possessions. Issey is very good at picking locks of any kind but never seems to steal anything of real value. Issey takes the reader by the hand and slowly leads them on a journey through the life he lives at night, helping himself to people’s things that he feels are in excess. His brother Rohel, sister-in-law Anissa, and niece Madison have quite an influence on Issey as he has on them.
In Second Pocket First by Gregory Grosvenor, the title of the book sheds light on the story as the reader and Issey wander through his adventures, jobs, and various disasters. The reader learns the most interesting things about Issey and his bumbling ways. At times it feels as if Issey and his thoughts are not always of this world, and some of the main characters wonder if he is even living on the same planet, but he is a charming character. This book catches the reader’s attention with its simplicity and humor from the very first chapter to the very last page and an ending that is unexpected but wholly satisfying. I found it a wonderful light read that could be put down and picked up with ease. It is well worth more than one read. An easy read that keeps you smiling throughout the day.
