Hunted is the first book in The Abarath Trilogy by Damian Dawes. The story is set in 1982 and follows Katrina “Kat” Robbins as she realizes that evil lurks wherever she goes. There was a time when she was one of the most respected scuba divers, now she is just one of those on board an icebreaker. The crew is full of different characters (including some people who might not even deserve to be there) and a captain who is as conniving as one can expect. On the surface, everything was perfect, but Kat’s nightmares plagued her every night. Kat thought it was her past, but she had no idea that a terrifying evil by the name of Abarath was just around the corner, waiting to pounce at the right moment. Was there any way for Kat and the crew to make it out alive? Or was that the end for her?
I am not a huge fan of horror but a little gem like Hunted just made me want to pick it up. I knew I had no choice but to read it when I read the blurb of the story. It sounded fascinating, full of action, and with an intense protagonist who will give it her all. And it did not disappoint. Damian Dawes was right; it is “classic horror with fast-paced action.” Kat is a smart woman, but she is damaged and her confidence in herself is zero. Her past haunts her and that feeling is intensified by Abarath. The descriptions were chilling and made me look over my shoulder more times than I would like to confess. I hated the jump scares, but they made the reading experience incredible. I would highly recommend this novel to anyone who loves to read horror! Terrifying but so good!
