Gravity Flow: The Jimmy Whistler Stories by E.M. Schorb is a collection of short stories that detail moments in the life of Jimmy Whistler, and his encounters and experiences in 1960s America. The tales range in length, tone, and tenor as they move through slices of life. In Movie Money, Aunt Gertrude, an eccentric woman involved in illicit activities, relies on Jimmy and his family to maintain her delicate relationships while harboring delusions of magical powers. The Sandal Shop introduces Marsayas, an unconventional man who shares philosophical views with Jimmy, while Jimmy struggles with financial troubles and a strained marriage. In The Golden Fleece, Jimmy reconnects with Marsayas during a trip to the countryside, where the two bond over nature and philosophical discussions, ultimately embarking on a physically demanding hike that leads to an awe-inspiring waterfall.
E.M. Schorb’s Gravity Flow is an exceptional short story collection that delivers a multi-faceted read and an intimate look into our main point of view and flawed protagonist, Jimmy Whistler. The writing is sharp and intelligent, and as we progress through the anthology, there is a genuine feeling of connection, even if it is uncomfortable. Schorb does a great job of infusing the work with the era it embodies, and despite the short length of each piece, they do pack a huge punch. My favorite of the collection is the titular Gravity Flow, where a visit to Jimmy's parents' rooming house introduces people dealing with mental health, addiction, and poverty. As the story evolves, a tragedy forces Jimmy to acknowledge the hardships faced and the inevitable passage of time. Within the book's darker moments, there is the constant undercurrent of humanity and resilience that gives them power. Overall, this is a well-written, thoughtful portrayal. Recommended.
