Glenfiddich Inn centers around William and Margaret Morrison, Helen and Byron Townsend, their families and friends and co-workers and of course, the star of the book, Glenfiddich Inn. Each of these played a huge part in the events of the day, helping to change the way of so many things. I learned some surprising habits about Babe Ruth, Boston politics and corruption, and the men who made both the legal and illegal deals, the bombing and sinking of the Lusitania and the stories of the people on board, the flu that killed so many of the young men fighting in the war, the invention of the radio with all of the problems, regulations and setbacks it was forced to endure, and so much more. It all was presented in a setting that offered both real and fictitious events that kept me reading long into the night.
As I read Glenfiddich Inn, I felt as though I was put into a time capsule and taken back to the era of the early 1900s. Author Alan Geik draws a picture of life right before World War I reached America. He shared so many of the changes, ideals, and advancements that were taking place in America; it was an amazing picture of the events. While at times I found Glenfiddich Inn slow going, I never found it dull. Any fan of historical novels, especially those with an outstanding representation of what was happening in America while World War I was being fought overseas, will love this book. Alan Geik is a talented storyteller and historian all rolled into one neat package. This book screams success!
