Donald Samson's Eleven embodies the captivating adventures of 16-year-old Benedictus Waisel, a teen residing in Solodurum, a Swiss town, during the late 14th century. Benedict forgoes his family's tradition of becoming a stone mason and decides to pursue a career as a scribe instead. However, financial restraints prevent him from becoming a scrivener, and he ultimately joins the City Guard. Sadly, Benedict sustains a serious injury in a battle against invading French troops, but he lives to tell the tale. Eventually, because of his literary prowess, Benedict gains the attention of Baron Roland de Cornu, a prominent city council official. Baron Roland recruits Benedict to act as an undercover operative to expose the identity of a possible French spy hiding in the city. The shocking murder of Baron Roland results in Benedict being falsely imprisoned for his death. Benedict's best chance of freedom lies in the hands of Connie, his kind but slow-witted friend.
Eleven is a rousing YA historical novel, impeccably merged with fantasy elements that will keep readers on the edge of their seats. Samson has skillfully crafted an action-packed coming-of-age tale. Benedict's heroic quest will delight both young and mature readers alike. Through the protagonist's compelling journey, the author highlights several profound interpersonal and social issues like self-discovery, self-reliance, family expectations, friendship, religious fanaticism, social injustice, and overcoming adversity. Samson cleverly explores the deeper causes of social prejudice and how easily disadvantaged persons can become marginalized. Overall, this highly skilled author captures the reader's attention through his vivid prose. The unexpected twists throughout the story will keep readers riveted. Heidi Nisbett's black-and-white illustrations add a sense of wonder and whimsy to every chapter. This YA tale will entertain fans of fantasy-based historical fiction from beginning to end.
