Adam Wilkins and his father Luke were on a plane heading to the Nunavut territory to study Arctic wildlife with the Alaskan Environmental Research team. Adam woke up to find that their plane had crashed and his father had disappeared. After being picked up by a man on a donkey, Adam was taken to a prison called Darwin's tomb, sacred to the Inuit people, where his father was being held prisoner. The rest of the crew - Josh, Nicole, Seamore, and Brandon - were all right and had made it somewhere safe. Chin Si Lee was responsible for their capture and had been Luke’s rival for many years. Luke was in possession of a 1000-year-old treasured ring worn by the Viking King Lachlan that Chin wanted. An old chief helps Luke and Adam escape to the local village. Luke and Josh meet Isaac and Gustav the Finder who are in search of the treasure of the famed Viking. The ring is the key to the treasure but brings danger to Luke and his loved ones, leaving him with a difficult decision to make in Bitter Betrayal by Rebecca Hemlock.
Bitter Betrayal is a fantastic, thrilling novel filled with drama and intrigue from the plane crash to escaping from the tomb. The story is smooth flowing from beginning to end and a quick read. The interesting array of characters is well defined and their interdependence makes for intriguing relationships. Luke clearly trusts his son to behave responsibly. I especially enjoyed the action and adventure from when Adam awakes in the crashed plane through to the time when Luke returns to Nunavut. Rebecca Hemlock has done a great job of keeping the reader immersed in the story, which is to be continued in her next novel. All round, a delightful story that is highly recommended to readers of all ages.
