Devil in the Pale Moonlight by D. Hollis Anderson is set in a dystopian future where the world has crumbled under political fractures and social decay following the Second American Civil War. Set against a drastically altered America dominated by the Republic of Texas, the story introduces intriguing characters, starting with Robert Smith, a man living a nightmarish existence sustained through a new tech-driven ideation called the Animus Civitas. In this virtual simulation, reality blurs with digital fantasies. As Robert tries to immerse himself in this illusion, he is ensnared in a malicious game orchestrated by an enigmatic figure resembling the Joker from the Batman comics. It’s a world in which the poor are lured to their deaths while playing to give more wealth to the rich. An Heir-Architect emerges and is determined to break the system responsible for the killing of avatars and real people. But what are the chances of success?

This immersive world is akin to Suzanne Collins’ Hunger Games in which the ultra-rich use technology to not only enslave and dominate the poor, but also use them for sport. D. Hollis Anderson’s worldbuilding is stunningly drawn in a USA that has been overrun by white supremacists who are as greedy as they are heartless. The depiction of the chaos is exceptional, and the imagery transports readers to a place that feels like a nightmarish land. The characters are complex, starting from Robert, to Clarice, and the Joker figure. The narrative explores themes of oppression and social collapse, cleverly depicted through horrific imagery of a society on the brink. Devil in the Pale Moonlight is an excellent read for fans of dystopian novels and well-crafted science fiction; it pulsates with action and mesmerizes readers with its ingenious storytelling.
