At the end of the nineteenth century, instant wealth and power were available to those few lucky men who struck it rich in the goldfields of the West. In Notorious Love in Extraordinary Times by Emma Strong, we meet such a man; Sam Strong. When Sam left his difficult, dangerous work of haulage to stake a claim and search for gold near Cripple Creek, Colorado, he was just one of thousands seeking their fortune. But for Sam, the dream came true and he became a multi-millionaire overnight. In a town notorious for its rough and ready justice, violence, hard-drinking, gambling, and gold-digging “sporting women,” Sam tries to maintain a moral and fair lifestyle, especially with the treatment of his mine workers, who he sees as just hard-working men trying to feed their families as best they can and not expendable resources as many other mine owners see them. When the beautiful young doctor Lillian, daughter of a powerful U.S. Senator arrives, to practice in Cripple Creek, Sam falls hopelessly and passionately in love with her but love’s true course never did run smoothly. All Sam truly wants is to leave his wild, hard-drinking and gambling days behind him and settle down with Lillian to create their own family but events of the past seem to constantly dog the pair’s future and Sam must contend with any manner of trials and tribulations.

Notorious Love in Extraordinary Times is a tale based on true events and knowing this gives the story its needed authenticity and gravitas. Author Emma Stone does a marvelous job of painting the scene of an early frontier town built on gold, with all the seedy characters, violence, and chicanery that necessarily goes with a boom town. I particularly enjoyed the main character of Sam who, although a hard-drinking and gambling man, had an innate sense of fairness and morality despite the lies and deception that inevitably seem to be attracted to the search for the elusive yellow metal. Sam was loyal to a fault and defended his friends with forthrightness and fervor but was never one to back down from a fight or not defend his own beliefs. The romantic scenes in this story were beautifully composed and deeply sensual without ever crossing that invisible line into crass and crude. Whilst instant wealth certainly changed Sam’s circumstances, it didn’t seem to change his overall viewpoint on life, or indeed how he treated others, and for me, this was the underlying message of the tale. The author has indicated there is a sequel coming and I look forward to enjoying more adventures with these true-to-life characters. This was a fantastic read and one I greatly enjoyed. I can highly recommend this story.

America’s Western territories offered people a chance at a new life, thanks to the gold rush boom in the late 1800s. One of these people was Sam Strong. After striking it big in Cripple Creek, Colorado, Sam quickly became a multimillionaire. New wealth in the West brings danger and unwanted situations. Sam finds himself in the middle of gunslingers, a disreputable woman, whiskey, gambling, and thugs. At first, living in town as a wealthy man is exciting, and nothing could compare until he falls for the lovely Lillian, a physician from a well-to-do political family. Now the once exciting atmosphere becomes dangerous as they begin life together. Can Sam keep the threats to their lives from becoming a reality while indulging in the pleasures he is accustomed to, or will the Wild West become their demise? Find out in Emma Strong’s Notorious Love in Extraordinary Times.

Notorious Love in Extraordinary Times is a historical fiction and romance story with well-developed characters and a plot based on actual events. Emma Strong creates an exceptional atmosphere for her readers as she captures the era in the time of the Old West. All aspects of this novel are very well thought out and researched. I found myself relating to old Western movies as I turned each page. Readers can relate to Sam’s human faults, emotional ups and downs, and crazy situations. I absolutely loved this book and recommend it to anyone who enjoys historical fiction, especially the Old West genre.

Notorious Love in Extraordinary Times combines historical fiction, steamy romance, and interpersonal drama. It is best suited to mature adult readers owing to some moderate sex scenes, non-graphic references to violence, and some very mild adult language. Penned by Emma Strong, the story is based on real historical events and centers around the exploits of protagonist Sam Strong, who suddenly found himself rich during the gold rush boom of the 1890s. Living the high life came with plenty of problems for Sam as he battled the temptations of wild living in the Old West to win and settle down with the woman he loves.

Emma Strong captures a fascinating pocket of life in the Old West in this immersive and atmospheric novel, which delivers plenty of excitement but has a surprisingly poignant emotional core. It all seemed like fun and games in a world of gold, gambling, booze, and sex, but Sam’s vast wealth only brought more complications to the once-simple town he lived in. Strong has a keen capacity for showcasing the worst vices of humanity and how our desires can lead us into deep trouble. The romantic scenes are suitably exciting and give an interesting variation to the plot and pacing. The darker, more violent moments present a compelling contrast to remind us of the dangers awaiting Sam at every moment. Notorious Love in Extraordinary Times offers a rich tapestry of different facets of life set against a well-written, multi-sensory backdrop of historical life, and I’d highly recommend it.
