A Christmas Miracle At Ground Zero by Judith M. Ackerman follows a family of mice, living in New York City, who see the first responders' rescue efforts on September 11th, 2001. The mice watch in horror at the devastation of the fallen towers and in awe of those that stayed throughout the days and nights that followed to help the victims and clean up the debris. They wanted nothing more than to help the humans that worked so hard at Ground Zero but didn’t know what they could do to help. With so much work already done and so much left to do, the final responders at Ground Zero constructed a cross and prayed for those who had lost their lives and those still buried too deep in the ground. How could a small family of mice help those affected by the disaster?
The family of mice in A Christmas Miracle At Ground Zero by Judith M. Ackerman shares the events of the day the Twin Towers were destroyed in a way that kids can easily comprehend and learn from. The illustrations are beautiful images that enlighten young readers as they follow the story. I love the way the family of mice was affected by the events as much as their human counterparts. Yet, everyone worked together, inspiring the mice to try to help, providing an emotional impact that will help kids understand the importance of this historical event. I recommend this story to young children of an age to comprehend the events.
