Devil's Hand by Lori B. Duff is a legal thriller that tells the story of Jessica Fischer, a dedicated attorney who finds herself drawn into a dangerous domestic violence case. When the wife of a powerful county commissioner asks Jessica to help her escape her abusive marriage, Jessica believes her client's story but she can't shake the feeling that something is off. Jessica soon discovers that her opponent's influence extends far beyond the courtroom and threatens a lot more than just her job. Things get even more complicated when our hero's estranged father shows up and she has to confront painful childhood memories too. As the threats get more frightening and the evidence becomes harder to trust, Jessica realizes that uncovering the complete truth might be the only way to save both herself and her client.
Author Lori B. Duff captures the tense, high-pressure world of legal battles with an authenticity that reflects her own background in law. There's a great balance between Jessica's professional competence and personal vulnerability, and I liked how Duff developed multiple layers of conflict. There's the courtroom strategy, political manipulation, family drama, and then her personal growth that makes everything emotionally deep. The secondary characters also bring a lot to the story and I enjoyed the side plot with her father because it helps you to understand why Jessica behaves the way she does and what her childhood must have been like. Duff excels at creating scenes where the tension builds, and when Jessica finally uncovers the complete truth about her client and the forces working against them both, the revelation is surprising, yet it makes sense in all the clues laid out in the plot. Overall, Devil's Hand is a satisfying legal thriller that I highly recommend.
