Why is She Acting So Weird?: A Guide to Cultivating Closeness When a Friend is in Crisis by Jenn McRobbie is a very fitting title. For anyone that has ever had a friend or relative or even been the one going through a crisis, be it medical, familial or occupational, there is no denying the fear and abruptness of change that can put even the best of us off our usual game. Jenn McRobbie shares personal examples from her battle with cancer as they relate to her friends and how they helped her get through her crisis. Her unique perspective from analyzing both her own and her friends’ behavior, as well as giving a glimpse of what it is like to be the ‘weird one’, gives a complete picture that can be very helpful to those dealing with or helping others deal with upheaval in their lives.
I particularly enjoyed Why is She Acting So Weird? from the standpoint of having been on both sides of the equation, having battled with depression and also having numerous relatives get sick and hospitalized. Jenn McRobbie offers practical advice in a guide format that also gives a framework for how to come up with like ideas and check motivations before they do damage in a relationship. I would recommend everyone read this book, regardless of if they have come into a crisis or not, since we can never anticipate when something might happen. As someone who has been there, I wish I had had a resource like this at the time so that I could have understood it better myself. This book is also well worth subsequent reads.
