The King and the Ogre by William Joseph Birrell is 'A Book About Kindness, Caring, and Acceptance.' The great King Liam loves to look out over his town, watching the people go about their daily lives. Every year, he invites them all up to his castle to help harvest the fruits from his orchards and take part in a great feast. But every year, the harvest is interrupted by silly dragons flying down from the mountains and scaring the people. The king has a special friend he has known since he was a boy. Arlo is an ogre, but everyone loves him. Together, King Liam and Arlo devise a plan to stop the dragons from frightening everyone. Can they bring peace to the kingdom?

The King and the Ogre by William Joseph Birrell is a fun kids’ storybook with wonderful illustrations. It is packed with meaning, teaching children that just because someone looks different, it doesn’t mean they should be rejected—it’s what’s inside that counts. Inclusivity is an important theme in today’s world, and kindness and acceptance are two things all children should be taught. The story flows well, with good pacing and lovely characters. It is well-written and easy to follow with age-appropriate language, and designed to draw young readers in while teaching them to be kind and caring. It also touches on the importance of friendship and the strong bonds that can grow, despite the obvious differences between friends. This book is about teaching kids to look beyond external appearances and accept people for who they are. Highly recommended reading for youngsters, but perhaps some adult readers could learn a thing or two from this, too!
