And So... by Jason C. Dykehouse presents theological ideas through essays that speak on biblical texts, symbols, and figures. In Angels, Demons, and Baptism, he talks about the biblical roles of angels and demons, their symbolic and literal interpretations. The Rainbow: A Beautiful, Dangerous Sign interprets the rainbow in Genesis as a divine promise and a symbolic weapon. In God of the Storm, Dykehouse links the divine presence with storms, comparing depictions of God and Baal. Millennials Today speaks about differing Christian views on Christ’s return, including postmillennialism, premillennialism, and amillennialism. Journey of Labor and Rest links Labor Day traditions with Sabbath observance on the Oregon Trail. A Differently Abled Hero retells Ehud’s left-handed assassination of King Eglon, and Though I Walk Through the Valley contrasts Psalm 23’s divine protection with myths of violent deities.

And So... by Jason C. Dykehouse does a great job of collating the author's extensive work and making it personal to a reader, even for the first time, as was the case for me. Each essay is concise and impactful, striking a wonderful balance between providing a solid case for the point he makes, but doing so with unique brevity. In doing so, Dykehouse avoids the usual loquaciousness of theological pieces and makes them easy to digest in just a few minutes. That said, they still have a weightiness that keeps the wheels of thought turning. Among the collection, Healing Waters and Saying Goodbye stand out as my particular favorites. The retelling of Lourdes and its connection to both biblical tradition and personal loss is really stirring. The essay eloquently ties the spiritual significance of water with the painful realities of illness and death, making it one of the most moving entries for me. It's no wonder the author had such a long career, and I look forward to reading more of his work. Recommended.
