“Waiting for Josie” by Jackie and Scott Ferrell is a sweet tale of a young girl trying to understand and cope with the loss of her favorite uncle and her best friend, both killed in separate brutal accidents. Maggie is not dealing well with her anger and grief. While the recommended therapy and counseling helped some, it was the love and devotion of an injured dog that helped Maggie to heal. When faced with the possibility that this lost dog may die if not cared for, Maggie takes on the task, making it her mission not to see another life lost. As Josie is healed, the pair become inseparable and their bond is strong and loving. When Josie runs off while chasing a small animal, Maggie mounts a futile search for her dog. As fall turns to winter, and there is no sign of Josie, a miraculous phone call brings Josie back! But what Maggie sees and learns is that sometimes letting go is the greatest form of love, turning sadness into joy and acceptance.

Written in a simple, easy to read style, “Waiting for Josie” is a wonderful and touching coming of age story for younger readers as they learn about how one young girl comes to terms with things too overwhelming for her to understand. Jackie and Scott Ferrell have written a warm story that illustrates the feelings a child cannot always express, while showing them the light at the end of the tunnel. Love and loss are part of life and growing as a person.
