Villages by Robert Inman is a heartfelt and deeply human novel about Jonas Boulware, a young war veteran who returns to his Southern hometown of Copernicus after being physically and emotionally scarred in the Middle East. He struggles with memory loss and PTSD, and, on top of that, Jonas must also face painful family secrets and a turbulent domestic life marked by an abusive father and a guilt-ridden mother. With quiet strength, he rekindles old friendships, cares for a struggling teenager, and opens his heart to a talented but troubled singer. Along the way, he must decide whether to confront or bury the traumas that continue to haunt him. Inman writes with empathy and wisdom, creating a portrait of healing and community that is as tender as it is honest.
Author Robert Inman has a passion for character and emotion, and he captures the inner life of a wounded soul with rare sensitivity and a level of detail not often seen in dramas about veterans. The psychology of the narration is deeply felt and meticulously delivered in a nuanced and well-informed exploration of PTSD that those outside the condition can still relate to and understand. The story is also filled with love, a small-town atmosphere, and nostalgia that grounds the story in something timeless. The development and dialogue around Jonas lets readers get to know him layer by layer. This rich, character-driven story offers readers an emotional tale about redemption and struggle that’s unafraid to tackle life’s hardest truths. Overall, Villages is a powerful novel that I would not hesitate to recommend to anyone who enjoys quality drama.
