Alana Khan’s novel, Vartan, tells us the story of Lyra, who was born in captivity and then sold at a slave auction after her Master’s passing. Her savior is Vartan, an ex-gladiator turned rescuer of slaves, who buys Lyra’s freedom, only she doesn’t know this. However, Vartan has the patience of a saint and tries to remember what it was like being newly free. He takes it upon himself to show Lyra that there’s more to life than being a slave. And who knows, love might be on the horizon for these two; they just don’t know it yet.
Vartan by Alana Khan, while being a work of fiction, actually touches on many topics related to reality. For instance Lyra’s upbringing. Born in captivity, the only life she knew was that of being a slave. Once she was granted her freedom, it took her a while to assimilate into society. It can even be argued that the love she feels for Vartan could be misplaced gratitude. Don’t get me wrong, I am a sucker for alien romances, and this one is definitely on my list. This book is a slow-burn romance and this gives us ample time to see how each of them grows since Lyra’s rescue and separation from Vartan to find herself. I loved how Khan didn’t force a romantic connection between the two; instead, their newfound relationship occurred naturally. I can’t wait for the next installment of this series and look forward to seeing my fan favorites of the characters I’ve met so far.
