Ava and the Last Bird (Axel and Ava) by Tuula Pere is a fun and important book for young children. It is about a family with a young girl who is fascinated by watching a bird’s nest outside her window. It is awesome to watch as the eggs hatch and the small baby birds grow day by day. The adult birds feed them by bringing insects and worms for the chicks, waiting with their beaks wide open, and the little girl, Ava, wonders how she could help the family. One day she is sitting under their tree, reading a fairy tale book, and wonders if the birds would like to hear the story. She stands up and starts reading it aloud, so the chicks can hear her voice over the rustling sounds the tree makes in the wind. The real adventure starts when the chicks are old enough to leave the nest and learn to fly.
I can’t emphasize strongly enough the importance of teaching young children to feel empathy with other living beings as early as possible. Ava and the Last Bird does it brilliantly with beautiful, vividly colored images by Nyamdorj Lkhaasuren and easily readable text. Young children naturally identify with a family setting so similar to their own and will identify with the situation of being cared for by adults. Human parents should eagerly introduce this book to their young children and encourage them to read it aloud to each other, ask questions, and discuss it with their friends. The drawings are so well done, simple enough that children might try to make their own drawings and, perhaps, try to write simple stories themselves. I highly recommend this wonderful book by Tuula Pere to all parents who want their children to grow up with positive values.
