Ultimatum: Ultimatum series Book 1 by Vladimir Fleurisma is a dystopian novel set after a nuclear war decimated the world's population. Something sinister has emerged that feasts on anything living. The creatures are evolving, and more human survivors die from their insatiable hunger. D is a marine who has his sights set on reaching Three Mile Island. As Zach is running from the beasts, D rescues him. They find a bunker with a small group living inside. Zach spends his time trying to get close to Dede. D feels Hank, the leader, is hiding something. He takes an interest in Cella because of the chemical weapons and healing medicines she has created. D feels heightened trepidation when Wanda asks him to make sure her grandchild Saffire learns the same skills he has used to survive outside of the bunker.

Vladimir Fleurisma included several moral lessons in the narration. I found an interesting conversation between D and Cella during which they discussed what age group adapted the quickest and what social behavior would not form without parents. The amount of competition between the role players with military experience and civilians was intense. The women did not get along well and were quick to stab each other in the back. There was never a dull moment to be found anywhere. The dialogue is engaging and revealed the unique personalities of every character. Watching the shift in opinions gave me a clear understanding of the intentions of each person. The monsters kept everyone on their toes, and I kept thinking the worst whenever silence followed any encounter. The transitions were seamless, and the ending was unpredictable. I recommend Ultimatum to dystopian readers who enjoy stories with intense suspense and danger.

The nuclear fire was the climax of the fifty-year resource war. This saw endless tracts of wasteland, mutant predators, and a few survivors as the new state of the planet. Eighteen months after the end of the war, D (a marine sniper) stumbles into Zach (a tech expert) who was running for his life after his crew was attacked by mutant predators while on a scavenging mission. Taking Zach in tow, D found himself seeking refuge from the wild lands in a bunker with a small group of survivors. The only thing that mattered to him was reaching Three Mile Island. But he was betrayed by his hosts who were also headed for the Island, leaving him and Zach for dead in the bunker. With so many enemies to watch out for, scarce resources, and savage mutant predators roaming the endless wastelands, would D succeed in his mission? Ultimatum by Vladimir Fleurisma is a must-read for lovers of classic science fiction with a touch of action, wit, and drama; a gripping tale of survival, betrayal, love, loyalty, trust, guns, war, mutant monsters, and soldiers. Featuring an amazing group of protagonists, the author weaves a most intriguing plot. I loved the way the book gives just enough detail in the storyline so as not to slow the pace. The vivid depictions bring the action to life captivatingly. One moment I was watching D fight for his life against the all-powerful predators and the next I was listening to refreshing conversations in the bunker. Vladimir has a knack for palpably capturing the characters' feelings. This is a magnificent piece of work and I loved it. I’m on my way to get the other installments in Vladimir’s amazing series.

Ultimatum: Ultimatum series Book 1 by Vladimir Fleurisma is a thrilling post-apocalyptic novel that takes readers on a wild ride through a desolate and dangerous world. The story is set in a bleak future, 18 months after a devastating nuclear war has left the earth scorched and barren. A few who survived are struggling in a world haunted by a mysterious breed of mutant predators known as the Uglies or Brogs. Our hero, simply called D, is a hardened ex-marine who has been tasked with getting to Three Mile Island no matter what obstacles present themselves. Along the way, D meets Zach and a rotating group of characters and, with their help, navigates a treacherous wasteland and faces off against the predatory Brogs to reach his destination.

One of the standout features of Ultimatum by Vladimir Fleurisma is the great ensemble cast of characters, each with a unique personality and motivation. Even though it is mostly told through D's perspective, the other characters keep the story engaging. The dialogue is snappy and realistic, which adds to the overall authenticity of the characters and their situations. Fleurisma does a great job depicting the necessary evolution of our concept of gender roles and its performance in the wake of a world-changing disaster akin to The Road by Cormac McCarthy. This theme is expertly woven into the story, making it both thought-provoking and entertaining. It is perfect for readers who enjoy action-packed stories and for those who love zombie fiction or sci-fi genres. I highly recommend this book and I am eagerly anticipating the next in the series.
