In Joe the Fruitful: Faithful Joseph's Journey from Dreams to Fruitful Destiny, P.O. Isen speaks on the biblical story of Joseph, detailing his journey from favored son to a position of power in Egypt. Joseph, born to Rachel and Jacob, is sold into slavery by his jealous brothers but rises to prominence while serving Potiphar. After being falsely accused and imprisoned, he interprets dreams for Pharaoh’s officials. His ability to interpret Pharaoh’s dreams of seven years of abundance followed by famine leads to his appointment as governor, responsible for managing Egypt’s resources. Eventually, his brothers seek food in Egypt, and upon revealing his identity, Joseph invites his family to settle in Goshen. Isen talks about themes of divine purpose, forgiveness, and familial reconciliation throughout Joseph's transformative journey.
P.O. Isen's examination of biblical history is clearly the result of exhaustive research, and while I am unfamiliar with the subject, his knowledge is evident throughout the work. The writing is fair, though Isen often employs short, perfunctory sentences and exclamation points that may not appeal to all readers. That said, I found the text particularly engaging because I share a name with one of Jacob and Leah's sons, so that was interesting to read. However, the best part of the book for me was Isen laying out Joseph's rise to prominence after interpreting Pharaoh's dreams, demonstrating not only his remarkable abilities but also his role in saving Egypt from famine. Overall, Isen offers readers a deep dive into Joe the Fruitful and a lesson on virtue, family dynamics, and the power of faith, making it a thoughtful and thought-provoking read for those interested in biblical history. Recommended.
