The Trousseau by Victoria Staat twists from a robbery gone wrong to being indebted to the handsome Lord Cole Renfew. Gen and Cal have been on the run for two years after the death of their mother. Dressed as men, they turn to thievery to hide their identity from their father's man whose continually searches for them. Cole discovers Cal is Colleen but thinks Gen is a man and puts him to work rebuilding a wall from a recent attack. Her knowledge of defensive and aggressive tactics makes an impression on Cole. He begins to have hope of saving his castle from neighboring attacks. Everything changes when Cole discovers Gen is Genevieve, and she is beautiful. She has to face an attack from her father and the assault of a scorned suitor but finds she is terrified of losing her heart to this lord.
I found Victoria Staat to be an intriguing author who keeps you spellbound as the intensity and danger compound. The Trousseau has layers of secrets that unfold as Cole and Gen face incredible odds. The story is a whirlwind of surprises and unexpected heroes who step in when Gen needs a way out. The author keeps her characters realistic as Gen is usually strong and bold, but she questions her heart and makes decisions against what her heart wants. Cole has hopes of saving his castle and the lives that depend on him, though at times, he doubts his newfound weapons and is torn between his duty and Gen. This novel has the perfect amount of drama, deception, and romance.
