Fresh out of college in Greenville, Illinois, with an associate’s degree, wannabe journalist Avice C. Moor moves to Gamber, Florida to take a job as the Gardening & Entertainment reporter for the Gamber Herald Times. There’s not a lot going on in Gamber but Avice is determined to make a name for herself. She does this by focusing on Gamber’s most exclusive recluse, Grizzly Gus. Gus has failed at many things in his life. However, he excels at telling stories and does this at the local General Store and the McKitrick Elementary School in nearby Lutz. Somehow these stories, when reinterpreted by Avice C. Moor, end up increasing the newspaper’s readership. Avice is so enamored with Gus and his stories that she decided to publish The Life and Times of Grizzly Gus. Fact or fiction? You’ll need to read the book to find out.

If you’re looking for a book that will make you laugh out loud, The Life and Times of Grizzly Gus by Avice C. Moor certainly ticks all the boxes. The fact that a novice newspaper reporter can make a local hero out of someone not nearly as interesting as they’re portrayed makes for excellent comedy fodder. What I appreciate the most about the character of Gus is that he has no filter; he says whatever is on his mind—the way we all wish we could if the world wasn’t so p.c. Warning, don’t read this book while taking public transport as people will stare at you when you constantly burst out laughing. The Life and Times of Grizzly Gus is satire at its highest level, and anybody needing a good chuckle will find it here. I loved the book and found it extremely entertaining.

The Life and Times of Grizzly Gus by Avice C. Moor takes readers into the world of Gus, a grumpy but fascinating old guy living in the wonderfully named Prickly Heat Senior Citizen Trailer Park and Public Boat Launch near Viagra Falls. The story kicks off when a journalist sets out to write a simple profile on him but quickly finds this task is way more involved than expected. Gus has a way of spinning tales that pull you in, turning what should’ve been an easy assignment into something much bigger. Through these stories that go between heartfelt moments and some absolutely wild rides, we glimpse a life full of surprises, regrets, and connections. It’s funny, sometimes bittersweet, and ultimately a reminder of how sharing our stories can bring people together in ways we don’t expect.

Avice C. Moor does an incredible job of making Gus feel like a real person—one you can almost hear grumbling at you from the page. Telling the story through the journalist’s eyes works perfectly, letting us slowly uncover all the different sides of Gus alongside the writer. The trailer park setting adds so much personality to the book with all the interesting residents and quirky charm, and it feels like a world of its own that we can escape into. But what makes this novel a different read is how the characters and narrator find these deep moments in the middle of everyday life. That reflects so much on how we rush through our own lives and don't stop to notice things. One minute, you’re laughing at Gus’s sharp comebacks, and the next, you’re hit with something that makes you think, and that's the ideal balance of heart and humor that readers need. Overall, The Life and Times of Grizzly Gus is a truly special read for anyone who loves stories about unlikely friendships, hidden wisdom, and the magic of good storytelling.

What do you get when you mix a cantankerous curmudgeon with a spirited and caring young woman struggling to find her place in life? You get a delightful novel titled The Life and Times of Grizzly Gus by Avice C. Moor. The story follows a young reporter named Avice, who is just beginning her career at a local newspaper in Gamber, Florida. Starting at the bottom of the newspaper pecking order, young Avice sees her popularity rise when she begins a series of articles about the town's eccentric character, Grizzly Gus. However, there is much more to Gus than just a cranky old man full of stories. As Avice delves deeper, she uncovers the kind-hearted man hidden behind his grumpy exterior. Through her journey of getting to know Gus, Avice goes from looking for stories to discovering the beauty of life instead.

Lighthearted, feel-good, and entertaining, The Life and Times of Grizzly Gus by Avice C. Moor is a beautiful story that serves as a reminder of how friendship knows no boundaries and makes life worth living. This simple story isn't just about a 24-year-old reporter struggling to make it in her field; it's about discovering the beauty of life. Themes of personal growth are woven seamlessly into the narrative, making them subtle yet impactful. The masterful character development lends credibility to the story, with even the secondary and minor characters feeling relatable and authentic. Flora, Jimbo, and Connie are three fascinating individuals who were easy to connect with. The pacing is smooth, akin to sipping iced tea on a lazy day, yet it still includes moments of adventure, such as hunting for gators. With its borderline raunchy and tongue-in-cheek humor, The Life and Times of Grizzly Gus is the perfect read to lift your spirits. I wholeheartedly recommend this enjoyable tale.
