“With grown-ups close, we laugh and play,/ Keeping us safe in every way.” Sometimes all we want to do is play and have fun. But there are times when we must place safety first. In Dave W Ball’s Hiccup’s Safe Splash Spectacular (I love the alliteration in this title), Hiccup and his friends must learn the rules of pool safety before they can dive in and have some fun. First and foremost, there must always be an adult present. And, then there are the basics, like no running around the pool, no diving in the shallow end, and being observant of the others in the pool to make sure everyone is safe and having fun.

Dave W Ball’s picture book, Hiccup’s Safe Splash Spectacular: Safe Waters, Happy Hoppers: A Toddler’s Guide to Pool Play, is a great pool safety adventure for young readers. Told in rhyming verse and accompanied by bright, bold, and colorful illustrations, this story takes young readers on a tour of a backyard pool, listing all the safety rules that must be followed. The rhymes are entertaining and easy to remember, making the safety lessons fun to learn. Key to the rules is the importance of adult supervision at all times, both around the pool and during other activities as well. This is a great resource for kids to splash, play, and learn about water safety. At the end of the book is an interactive coloring exercise where young readers can color their part of the story. Entertaining and educational.

Dave W. Ball’s Hiccup’s Safe Splash Spectacular is a delightful and educational children’s book that blends engaging storytelling with essential lessons on pool safety. Through its rhyming text and vibrant illustrations, the book captures the joy of swimming while emphasizing the importance of following rules to ensure a safe and fun experience. The story features the Hiccup family enjoying a sunny day by the pool. They navigate playful moments interspersed with reminders like waiting for an adult to open the gate, taking turns on the slide, and diving only where it’s safe. These messages are seamlessly woven into the narrative, making it an ideal resource for parents, caregivers, and educators to introduce young children to water safety.

The colorful illustrations accompany the educational text and explain each pool safety rule in a way children can understand. The presentation on each page illustrates how to follow each rule displayed on the fence, just as you would see at a public pool. Dave W. Ball adds an interactive element by inviting kids to color illustrations while reflecting on safety practices, making learning enjoyable and memorable. Hiccup’s Safe Splash Spectacular is a perfect year-round read that pairs fun with responsibility, ensuring little ones can splash safely all season long. It’s an excellent book to hand out to children who take swimming lessons, and it’s perfect for classroom reading as children can discuss water safety and work on the activities together. Hiccup’s Safe Splash Spectacular is a book to be read before the summer season begins and whenever visiting swimming areas.

Hiccup's Safe Splash Spectacular: Safe Waters, Happy Hoppers by Dave W Ball is an educational book for toddlers who like to splash in the pool. This book teaches them pool safety in a delightful way with fun pictures and cute little rhymes. On many of the pages, simple safety rules are displayed by the pool and these rules are explained by the simple rhymes below or above the pictures. With every one of these rules, young readers learn that they must listen to adults and if they see any danger they should immediately ask for an adult’s help instead of trying to cope by themselves. This book is dedicated to pool safety instructors who are the most important safety educators, ensuring that children have fun safely.

I strongly advise parents to spend some time with their toddlers paging through this lovely book, making sure that their children pay attention to and understand the importance of the rules. The text is simple and easily understandable by preschool children and the pictures and the rhymes make it enjoyable while they internalize the lessons. I very highly recommend Hiccup's Safe Splash Spectacular: Safe Waters, Happy Hoppers by Dave W Ball to all adults who want to make sure that their toddlers have an enjoyable time splashing in their local pool without worrying about accidents that can happen when one or more of these rules are ignored. Even better, parents are advised to read this book to their toddlers in a group session, including the children’s friends, and encourage them to ask questions and memorize the rules.

In Hiccup's Safe Splash Spectacular by Dave W. Ball, the Hiccup family enjoys a day at their pool, following important safety rules. Papa Hiccup opens the gate, and the children, guided by adults, check that the pool is clear before entering. The children are reminded to walk around the pool to avoid slipping, dive only in the deep end, and use gentle hands. They take turns on the slide, ensuring safety by listening to what Papa Hiccup advises. When they get tired, the children are encouraged to float on their backs to rest. Papa Hiccup ensures that everyone knows where to exit the pool safely and that toys must be picked up afterward. This illustrated picture book shows how to have a fun, safe, and enjoyable day in the pool.

Hiccup's Safe Splash Spectacular; Safe Waters, Happy Hoppers: A Toddler's Guide to Pool Play by Dave W. Ball is a cheerful and effective safety manual tailored for the youngest swimmers. With its bold primary-color palette and simple, full-spread illustrations, the book holds the attention of toddlers and reinforces poolside safety rules. The book doesn't have a traditional storyline or plot, but the rhyming narrative is engaging and lyrical in delivering its lessons. I like how easily it covers the dos and don'ts of pool play—the standouts for me being to seek adult supervision and move carefully around water—in a tone that’s gentle but firm. The repetitive structure and soothing rhythm make it ideal for teaching safe behaviors. Overall, this is a valuable tool for caregivers, turning learning safety into a shared experience. Hiccup's Safe Splash Spectacular is another entertaining and educational children's picture book by Dave W. Ball. In this rhyming tale, readers will join young Hiccup and Papa Hiccup as they prepare to swim in the family pool in their home's sunlit yard. Papa Hiccup tells Hiccup that before they begin their fun adventure in the pool, Hiccup must learn the safety rules for everyone. Only adults can open the gate, and, before they jump in, children must say, "1-2-3, all clear?" If you see a friend in trouble, you must not try to save them yourself but throw them a life preserver and find a grown-up as quickly as you can. When you need a rest, you can float on your back. Jump in the middle, as it's the safe place to play, and avoid the steps.

Pools are a great place to have fun and play games, especially during a hot summer. Hiccup's Safe Splash Spectacular is a fun-filled rhyming story about water safety that will guide youngsters on how to safely navigate pool play. Featuring colorful illustrations and catchy rhymes, this picture book is funny, charming, and informative in equal measure. Do you like to swim and play in pools? If the answer is yes, this is the book you need to read. When everything is done safely, and the adults are there to watch over you, swimming is all the more fun. Dave W. Ball's Hiccup Series of picture books are gentle guides that make learning engaging and delightful for children through rhymes and illustrations, and this one is no different. Parents and teachers should definitely introduce this book to kids!
