C. Iron’s The Lost Truth of April Dark starts with seventeen-year-old April on the losing end of a battle with cancer. Stricken by sudden chest pain, her world turns black, and April awakens in a clearing with an azure sky above her, thinking that the afterlife is surprisingly blissful. When local villagers rescue her and take April to their village, she starts suspecting that “death” was only the start of this journey. A young lad claims that he’s seen April in one of his photos; staring back at April from the photograph was indeed an image of herself. Joining up with a third-degree mage, a healer, and an ax-wielding dwarf, who are on their own mission to save their once peaceful kingdom, April embarks on an adventure to answer the burning questions plaguing her mind: what is this world, why is she here and who is behind it all?
C. Iron crafts a mysterious tale as April tries to uncover what has happened to her. April and the reader are put on equal footing as little is given away about her situation or the world around her. This left me on the edge of my seat as every little twist in the plot spurred my curiosity further and further. To top it all off, April has to adjust to a world of magic, mages, and monsters. A fantastic cast of characters full of banter, a thrilling story, and vivid world-building make The Lost Truth of April Dark a fantastic introduction to the trilogy.
