Diary of Betsy Shaw by P.J. Roscoe revolves around Betsy Shaw's persistent efforts to unravel the mystery of her friend Maggie's disappearance and deteriorating situation. After Maggie vanishes, Betsy uncovers troubling details about Maggie's forced prostitution and her possible confinement in an asylum. Betsy is determined to help Maggie, despite resistance from her husband, Henry, who is more concerned with their domestic life. Alongside allies like Mrs. Richardson, Lady Harrison, and Sara, Betsy uncovers connections between Maggie's predicament and powerful figures, including Sir George Harrison. Betsy's pursuit of justice for Maggie strains her marriage, and she faces constant societal and familial pressure. Through her search for Maggie and her son Jonathan, Betsy challenges the roles imposed on women, juggling a desire for independence and human autonomy.

P.J. Roscoe’s Diary of Betsy Shaw is the second book in the historical fiction Diary series and leans heavily into love, womanhood, and how women rose above their patriarchally imposed stations. Roscoe’s writing is simple and straightforward, transporting readers to the 1860s in the format of written journal entries. The entries go beyond what would customarily be found in a diary, and they include actual dialogue exchanges, so the character development stretches even to those outside Betsy's first-person recollections. The character development is exceptional, and Betsy is especially relatable and resilient as she pushes through archaic limitations. Roscoe also does well in depicting the issues between Betsy and her husband, Henry. Overall, the novel’s strong mystery, coupled with a good sense of era and atmosphere, makes it a highly recommended read for fans of historical fiction.
