Mickey Martin’s Given trilogy reaches full arc as its final installment, The Guardian, brings back Lilliana Night who leaves her haven for a final dance with death as she tries to rid the world of a ruthless criminal. Her target has made her and the people she holds dear enter a nightmare that grows more horrifying every day. Gregory Reid stokes the fires of her fury to no end. A man who doesn’t care about the lives of others, Reid must be stopped at all costs for he has the code to a bioweapon device that can create damage on an apocalyptic scale. Lilliana must play her cards right, for Reid has a cunning way to get inside her head. Perhaps if she succeeds, her dream of creating her own family with Damon may well become a reality.
The Guardian gives the right ending to a smart, hard-edged, psycho-romantic, action thriller. One of the strengths of Mickey Martin’s organic writing is how she explores the romantic relationship between Lilliana and Damon and how it becomes an integral part of the storyline. Martin gives her heroine a chance to rediscover who she is and how she could enjoy it. With a healthy sense of justice, Martin gives Lilliana the kind of life that she deserves in the end. The Guardian has the right balance between action and romance. It has emotional weight, but it is action-driven at the same time. As Lilliana finds a renewed confidence through love and sweetness, the plot doesn’t fall short in reminding you of real contemporary concerns. This explosive must-read that concludes The Given trilogy gives Martin an achievement that cannot be denied.
