Sherlock Holmes: Cases of the Seven Deadly Sins is an anthology by Roger Riccard. Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson are kept busy with cases that are based on the seven deadly sins. These sins are Envy, Pride, Wrath, Greed, Lust, Gluttony, and Sloth. Envy rears its ugly head when a judge is murdered in A Perpetrator in a Pear Tree. Pride is the mask we wear to hide our weaknesses in The Etheridge Escapade. In Wrath, Holmes finds the security for the Prime Minister too deadly for comfort. A food critic makes enemies after writing bad restaurant reviews in Gluttony. True love cannot be bought as evident in Lust. In Sloth, a young woman becomes concerned when her fiance is missing. Greed is the motive when a kidnapped man is found dead.
Roger Riccard has now beaten Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s record of writing 60 Sherlock Holmes stories with his themed anthology, Cases of the Seven Deadly Sins. Each short case is distinctive with its described sin and well played out with good character development. Sherlock Holmes displays an indifferent, aloof, but smart personality in all the tales. Dr. Watson offers the strong support and sage advice that is needed by Holmes and his clients. Inspector Lestrade is one of my favorite characters, as well as Holmes’ landlady. The stories are moderately paced, interesting, and amusing at times whenever Holmes goes into deep thinking mode or Dr. Watson subtly describes Sherlock Holmes so that readers can get to know him better as I did.
